nyc blues.

Man, NYC was cold but I was in love with it nonetheless. There wasn’t ice on the ground and it only flurried at times and that’s all one can hope for! I’ve been to NYC countless times, I’ve briefly lived in the East Village, West Village and Lower East Side. I came back to NYC this weekend on my boss’s dime! Thanks boss! We were meeting with some potential Publicists and Radio Promoters for Drew Smith. What a whirlwind of a weekend! My best friend and I went to some of our fave places- Babycakes, Panna II, and Forever 21. We didn’t have time to do much because I was in meetings for most of the weekend. So sad. Can’t wait to go back and actually do fun things.

Nightlife in NYC revolved around the band for the most part, but Friday was fun. I made a new friend and met up with my old friend, Alix from Boston and of course Kristy was there! I met Kyle for the first time on Fri. in Brooklyn. He missed my band’s performance on Fri. but he came to meet up anyways. Kyle is a Phd. student from Australia. We share a mutual friend from Australia whom, coincidentally I also met for the first time when she came through NYC. My friend, Gayatri, and I are huge Ben Kweller fans and this was right after I started working for him. She came down with her mom to visit the city and maybe look at law schools? In the end she chose Leeds in England but the day or so we had together was so much fun! We had delish pizza at Lombardi’s in Soho and just walked around the city and gossiped. It was like we had known each other forever. I haven’t seen her in years and when I went to Australia she was studying in England! Kyle is an American historian and he’s writing his dissertation that requires him to spend copious amounts of time in liberies all across America! He gets to travel as much as Kristy and I do touring! Except, he spends more time in libraries than we will in our lifetime! Gayatri gave him my name because he doesn’t have any friends in NYC and he was just very lucky that I was going to be in the city instead of in Austin! Now, he’s leaving NYC with 5 more friends in tow, and Kristy and I have a place to stay in Sydney! Good trade. After a few drinks and the bar we were in (Pete’s Candy Store) got louder and louder we migrated to Alligator Lounge a few blocks away for some pizza. The deal is: One beer gets you a whole tray of your own individual pizza! It was amazinng! Drink+ Pizza for $5, incl. tip. SCORE.

I am a sci-fi nerd so on Saturday I met up with my sci-friends Loretta and Erin. I love those girls. We can chat about Twilight and Roswell and what all the actors we are in love with from these sci-fi shows are up to these days. We can talk about Comic Con, Roswell episodes and Twilight rumors and randomness and I just know they won’t think I’m a weirdo. One of my other bff’s boyfriend, Tom, came down to meet with us too! He’s a big shot at Capitol Records these days but overall, he’s just a blast to hang out with. Especially since he’s like 6′4″ and I’m 4′9.” Everyone really enjoyed the Rockwood Music Hall showcase even though we went on at 3PM! We had tons of people crammed into the place and we made $80 bucks! We made over $100 bucks for our two nights in NYC, which is really good considering most new bands to NYC make like $20. I had one made make that much one time! I really can’t wait to go back.

Tom, me, Kristy, Erin, Loretta and Kyle all roamed around the East Village a bit before disbanding at around 11PM. That’s about 8 hrs with each other and it was such a blast. Kyle went to a rockabilly show that I didn’t have the energy to go to, Kristy went back to the hotel. Tom, Loretta and Erin headed home. I made the trek to Brooklyn and somehow caught the L as it was about to leave so I didn’t have to wait! It took me to bedford, which was the stop I needed anyways and I went to see HYMNS. I didn’t get to see them play because they went on second to last and it was already like 1AM and they still weren’t on the stage but I talked to one of my fave peeps, Jason for awhile about the upcoming SXSW festival. Met and was introduced to a member of My Morning Jacket, and their business partner on the way out. And a NYC trip isn’t complete with running into someone you know, randomly on the street, like I did with our old guitar tech, Zach!

I missed Music Friday! Here’s a video for you guys. I love stop motion video. I’ve made a few and it takes a HECK OF A LOT OF TIME AND PATIENCE. I’ve seen a lot of good ones lately but this one is pretty creative.

We had a great turnout in NYC for Drew Smith, even though we booked the shows 2 weeks before going to NYC. Hope NYC will have us back soon.
